7. DELETIONS, ADDITIONS, MODIFICATIONS AND AMENDMENTS.
(E) Section 1007.1 shall be add to the Uniform Fire Code, 1994 Edition, to read as
follows:
Section 1007.1, Smoke Detectors. In addition to the requirements of Appendix 1-A.6 of
the Uniform Fire Code, smoke detectors shall be provided in all existing single family
dwellings, two family dwellings, multifamily dwellings, apartment houses, and guest
rooms used for the purpose in motels, hotels, inns, and rooming houses.
In all dwelling units except efficiency apartments, the smoke detector shall be mounted
on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in a corridor or other area giving access
to rooms used for sleeping purposes. In efficiency apartments, lodging houses,
sleeping rooms, motel rooms, or hotel rooms, the smoke detector shall be centrally
located on the ceiling of the main floor of the main room or sleeping room. Where
sleeping rooms are on the upper level, the smoke detector shall be placed near the
center of the ceiling directly above the stairway serving such upper level. All smoke
detectors shall be located in accordance with of Appendix 1-A.6 of the Uniform Fire
Code, 1994 Edition. When activated, the smoke detectors shall provide an alarm in the
dwelling unit or guest room.
It shall be the duty of the owner of every building regulated by this Section to provide an
approved, operable smoke detector system. It shall be the duty of the owner of every
rooming house, hotel, motel, duplex, and multifamily unit to be regulated by this Section
and to install an approved, operable smoke detector system. It shall be the duty of the
occupant of every unit within every dwelling and apartment house regulated by this
section to maintain an approved, operable smoke detector system within the
dwelling unit provided as part of the building's fire warning system.
For the first offense of failure to comply with any provisions of this section, the Fire
Inspector shall issue a warning ticket and instruct the owner, agent, or occupant in the
proper installation and use of the smoke detector system. Said owner, agent, or
occupant shall have a reasonable time to comply with said warning ticket and to meet
the requirements of this Ordinance. If said owner, agent, or occupant thereafter fails to
comply with said warning ticket, it shall constitute a misdemeanor and shall be
punishable as provided in this Ordinance.
