Open burning within the greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, a six county area including Platte County and the Southern Platte Fire Protection District, must meet regulations set forth by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Air Quality Control Division.
These regulations limit open burning without a permit to agriculture operations preparing a field for planting and harvesting. Cooking fires, campfires, and ceremonial or bonfires are also permitted without a permit. However, a permit from DNR is required for all other allowable open burning.
To obtain a burn permit:
Download an application and fax it to us at 741-7292, or pick one up at Station 4 (N Highway and I-435) during working hours.
Fill out all spaces in the first section pertaining to applicant, location of burn site, and material to be burned. Return the completed application to us.
The application will be turned over to the Fire Marshal, who will make a site inspection to determine if burning poses any hazards. Such a determination may cause the application to be denied. If that happens, you will be notified.
If the application is approved, it will be forwarded to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, which must also approve the application. You will receive notification from DNR if your application has been approved. Questions regarding your application should be directed to Bill Vossberg, Department of Natural Resources: (816) 554-4100.
Notify us on the day of the burn. The permit holder must have a copy of the permit at the site, as well as a watchman on duty with a means of preventing any spread of the fire.
Violation of this ordinance is punishable by fine.
Direct your permit questions to Fire Marshal Dean Cull at 741-2900.
