Keeping your laundry or utility room safe is relatively easy, but it's an on-going job. High heat, dust and lint, possible gas fumes, and high electrical loads can make it a dangerous place if you're not careful.

- Keep an ABC- or BC-rated fire extinguisher handy, especially if your junction box is in the same room.
- Clean the dryer filter and vent frequently.
- Install a smoke detector
- Install a carbon monoxide detector if you have a gas dryer or if your furnace is also in the laundry room.
- Have your furnace and air conditioner professionally serviced each year.
- Locate electric washers and dryers in a well-lit area where water and dampness do not accumulate.
- Never leave an iron and ironing board unattended.
- Vent dryers properly, and ground all electrical appliances with adequate wiring.
