The U.S. Coast Guard requires several pieces of equipment be on all boats. These include:

- a gas-ventilation device on the fuel tank
- a flame arrester on the engine
- a fire extinguisher
- a visual distress signal
- a sound-producing device
- an oar
- a personal floation devices for all persons onboard
- a throwable PFD, such as a seat cushion-type device

When you're planning your day on the lake, pack along a few extra items for safety:

- Water
- Sunscreen
- A hat
- Sunglasses
- A cellular phone
- A weather radio

And don't forget to file a float plan with a trusted friend or family member -- tell that person where you're going, how long you'll be there, and who to call if you don't return home at the planned time.
