Installing a new
detector? Follow these guidelines:
You should install a detector on each occupied floor of your residence, including the basement and the
attic, if there’s living space there. That includes one right outside each bedroom.
- Wall-mounted smoke detectors should be installed so the top is six to 12 inches from the ceiling.
- Ceiling-mounted detectors should be mounted at least six inches away from any wall.
- If a room has a pitched ceiling, mount the detector at the ceiling’s highest point.
- Mount detectors at the bottom of stairways that close-off with doors.
- Install detectors away from drafts, such as windows, doors, or forced-air registers for your furnace.
- Maintain your detector monthly.
- Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do if the alarm sounds.
