Fire extinguishers

Using a properly maintained, properly selected fire extinguisher is surprisingly easy.

Kidde, a company that makes home fire extinguishers, suggests remembering the acronym "PASS."

P - Pull the pin.
A - Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
S- Squeeze the handle or trigger while holding the extinguisher upright.
S - Sweep the nozzle back and forth, covering the area with the extinguishing agent.

When the extinguishing agent hits the fire, the fire might flare. Don't worry, just keep spraying onto the fire. The flare -- and the fire -- should die down. Keep spraying until the fire dies out. Remember, always leave an escape route for yourself when you're using the extinguisher. Don't paint yourself into a corner.
